Some records are kept out of the public online system. Cases involving civil commitment, domestic abuse, and harassment do not display documents in MCRO. Criminal cases that ended without a conviction must be searched by case number only. Juvenile delinquency matters involving felonies for people 16 and older are also excluded. For those types of cases, you need to visit the courthouse in person or call the court office. Under Minn. Stat. § 13.03, the default rule is that government data is public unless a law restricts it. Most Watonwan County court records fall under that open standard.
eCheck-In and Remote Appearances
Watonwan County District Court offers eCheck-in for some case types. This lets you check in for a hearing without having to appear at the courthouse. It is available for criminal cases, juvenile delinquency cases, and Child in Need of Protection or Services (CHIPS) cases. Use the Minnesota Judicial Branch website to access the eCheck-in option before your scheduled hearing date.
The court also provides two special local forms. The Fifth District Request for Continuance Best Practice form lets you ask to reschedule a hearing. The Request for Remote or In-Person Appearance form lets you tell the court whether you plan to appear by video or in person. These forms are available from the court office or through mncourts.gov.
Under Minn. Stat. § 13.82, criminal incident data is generally public. If you need records related to an arrest in Watonwan County, search MCRO for the court case or contact the Watonwan County Sheriff for the original incident report. These are two different record sources handled by two different offices.
