How to Search Polk County Court Records
The free Minnesota Court Records Online (MCRO) system is the right place to start any Polk County case search. You can look up cases by person name, business name, attorney name, case number, or citation number. Results show party names, case type, filing date, full docket history, and current status. MCRO runs around the clock with no login or account needed.
MCRO provides four search tabs. Case Search finds cases by name or number. Document Search pulls up filed documents by case number. Hearing Search lets you look up scheduled hearings by name, case number, judicial officer, or attorney. Judgment Search lets you check docketed money judgments by debtor name. Public documents filed on or after July 1, 2015 are available in full online. Earlier records have limited online access and may need to be requested in person or by mail.
Some case types are not accessible through MCRO. Civil commitment, domestic abuse, harassment, felony delinquency for people 16 and older, and CHIPS cases are confidential and do not appear in public searches. If you are a party to one of these cases and need records, call the court at (218) 281-2332 to ask about the right steps.
Polk County has a detailed fee schedule available at mncourts.gov. Certified copies cost $14 per document. Exemplified and certified copies are $28. Uncertified copies are free. Packets of 11 pages or more cost $5. NSF checks carry a $30 fee.
For in-person requests, go to the Justice Center at 816 Marin Ave, Suite 210 during regular business hours. Mail requests are also accepted with proper payment included. You can pay fines and many fees online at the Court Web Payment portal. Under Minn. Stat. § 13.03, government data in Minnesota is presumed public unless classified as private or confidential. Most Polk County civil and criminal records are open to any member of the public.
MCRO - Minnesota Court Records Online

Criminal Records and Background Checks
For criminal history that goes beyond the court file, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) maintains a statewide criminal history system. The BCA covers arrest and conviction data from across Minnesota, not just Polk County. It is separate from MCRO and is the right tool when you need a broad view of someone's public record rather than just what is on file in the county.
Arrest data collected by law enforcement is public in Minnesota under Minn. Stat. § 13.82. This includes the date, time, and place of arrest, the charge, and the officer's name. Using MCRO along with BCA data gives a complete view of any person's public criminal record in the state. For most searches, starting with MCRO and following up with BCA covers the key bases. Naturalization records for Polk County residents are also available at the Minnesota Historical Society under File No. SAM035 if you need older records.
