Lac qui Parle County District Court

The Lac qui Parle County District Court is located at 600 Sixth Street in Madison. Court Administrator Lindsay Listul manages court operations and records for the county. Free public parking is available at the courthouse. The court is part of the Eighth Judicial District, which covers Big Stone, Chippewa, Grant, Kandiyohi, Lac qui Parle, Meeker, Pope, Renville, Stevens, Swift, Traverse, Wilkin, and Yellow Medicine counties, with the district seat in Willmar.

Lac qui Parle County District Court began offering eFiling and eService in December 2015, an early adoption for the Eighth District. Attorneys filing cases in the county are required to use the state's electronic filing system. Self-represented litigants may still file paper documents with the Court Administrator's office during regular business hours.

The Lac qui Parle County Courthouse has an interesting history. In 1886, 150 men and 40 wagon teams from Madison physically moved the entire courthouse from the village of Lac Qui Parle to Madison, 15 miles away. Ten years later, a Richardsonian Romanesque style building was built at a cost of $30,689, designed by architects Buechner and Jacobson. Original oak can still be found in the counters, cabinets, stairs, banisters, and doors inside the building.
